Dear Dr. Lenimar Nunes de Andrade,
I wish to take this opportunity to ask you if you could offer me an employment
in the area of symbolic/numeric computations and/or their applications in
Applied/Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, Hydrodynamics, Computational Physics or
Engineering. I would like to get an appointment preferably related to
using/extending Mathematica, Maple or Reduce system in business, research or
educational purposes; others computer algebra systems, for example, Axiom,
Macsyma, Theorist, are of interest to me as well in this respect.
I would be immensely grateful to you for information about possible vacancies,
opening positions, any useful advice or for kind assistance.
I would be very grateful to you if you could find an opportunity to forward my
request to the Chairman of the Department (to the Personnel Director or to the
Hiring Committee) or, if it is possible, to the colleagues interested in CAS
and/or Computing.
Some information about me. My name is Alexander Urintsev. I am 47 years old
and presently work as a Senior Research Associate at an International Research
Center of Nuclear Physics, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR),
situated in Dubna (Russia). I am engaged in developing data-analysis systems
and processing the experimental High Energy Physics data by means of various
statistical and numerical programs and some sorts of computer graphics.
During three last years I extensively used in my daily work the wonderful
graphical, numerical and symbolic capabilities of the Mathematica package and
the Maple package as well.
But now I have rather bad perspectives to continue my work in Russia, as the
conditions for scientific work in the field of Computing or other serious
professional activity in the area of fundamental or applied research are
degrading permanently, and there is no hope that the situation will be
improved in the nearest future.
I would be very grateful to you if you could find an opportunity to answer me
if there is a possibility for me to work at your University on any basis
(contract, post-doc, etc.). It would be very nice for me to be employed for
permanent work (or for several years) to develop new application areas for
Mathematica, Maple or Reduce, or carry out research/business investigations
in the field of symbolic/numeric computation, Applied/Pure Mathematics,
Mechanics, Hydrodynamics or Physics working as a scientific programmer,
researcher or software engineer. Also, I could work as a teacher of Computer
Science, Mathematics, Mechanics or Hydrodynamics having an ample experience
in teaching undergraduates at the Rostov State University (Rostov-on-Don,
Russia).
Therefore I enclose here some additional materials pertaining to my request:
Resume, List of Publications, five letters of recommendation and copies of
scientific degrees.
I would like to inform you that I have got an experience in Applied
Mathematics, Mechanics and Computer Science during 24 years of work as a
researcher at several research institutions. My work is connected with the
various problems of numerical and symbolic analysis. I received my Ph.D. in
Mechanics of Fluids, Gas and Plasma in 1980. During a long period of time I
worked with problems of hydrodynamic stability and appearance of turbulence
and acquired an experience in solving the Navier-Stokes equations on
computers. I am familiar with modern software, libraries of scientific
computer programs such as NAG Fortran Library, CERN Program Library, IBM SSP,
Harwell Subroutine Library and with a wide range of computers. Besides I
possess the 11-years experience in teaching students at the Mechanical-
Mathematical Department of the Rostov State University, where I lectured on
Programming in Computer Algebra Systems, Computational and Applied
Mathematics, Analytical Mechanics and Theoretical Hydrodynamics.
Earlier, during some 9 years, I had used quite actively and with some success
the computer algebra system REDUCE, based on LISP, with a research purposes
and to teach students of the University to Pure and Applied Mathematics,
Mechanics and Hydrodynamics. As a result, I have published several scientific
papers concerning the application of symbolic computations in magnetostatic
optics of charged particle.
The Institute, where I work, has bought Mathematica and Maple, and I have
used since 1991 these systems: at first I dealt with the Mathematica Version
1.2 and later with Maple V and the Mathematica Version 2.0. My scientific
work supported by Mathematica and Maple was a great success and now, as I
believe, I am quite experienced in the Mathematica and Maple programming.
Particularly, thanks to Mathematica and Maple I succeeded in making a good
mathematical model of the ununiform 3-dimensional magnetic field inside the
spectrometer with a vertex detector. It was created at the JINR together
with the Institute of High Energy Physics (Serpukhov) to solve some urgent
and important problems of Particle Physics. Also, I would like to mention
that by means of Mathematica and Maple I has successfully investigated the
dynamics of the longitudinal motion of charged particles in the TRITRON type
accelerator. The fulfilment of these and other scientific tasks resulted in
new Mathematica packages pertaining to Applied Mathematics and Mathematical
Physics. Apparently, these packages may happen to be of more significance in
applications. Mark Moline, the MathSource Administrator of Wolfram Research,
helped me to install in the MathSource Collection at Wolfram Research these 7
packages (please see the List of Publication, ref. c38 - 44u).
As I hope, the List of Publications (enclosed) will allow you to appreciate
my experience in Applied/Computational Mathematics and programming in the
field of symbolic/numerical computation.
In conclusion of my letter I would like to inform you that during 7 months I
am a member of MathGroup and a member of the electronic teleconference
sci.math.symbolic as well. Besides, since March 1992 I am a member of the
Reduce Forum. It allows me via electronic mail to maintain relations with the
specialists in the field of symbolic computation over the world. It should be
noticed that this intercourse with developers of computer algebra systems
helped me to improve essentially my style and level of programming in this
area.
If you should require additional information regarding my work experience,
education or personal situation, I would be happy to provide it.
Dear Sir, I am very grateful to you for the trouble you have taken to
consider my request. I would appreciate any help. Thank you for your time.
I look forward to your reply.
Sincerely,
Alexander Urintsev, Ph.D.

I have known Dr. Alexander Urintsev for about 9 years. I was introduced
to him in Rostov-on-Don, where I lived in those days. In Rostov we carried
out a joint investigation: me and Dr. Alexander Urintsev by means of
computer have simulated the solidification process of molten steal. It was
very important to obtain a sufficiently accurate solution of the problem for
concrete values of physical constants and sizes of steal castings because
specialists in casting assumed to use the results of our investigations in
practical work at Rostselmash, a big plant situated in Rostov-on-Don and
producing many sorts of agricultural machines.
Mathematically the full problem of solidifying of molten steal is formulated
as a complex system of nonlinear partial differential equations in one time
variable and three space variables under relevant boundary conditions. It
should be stressed that the existence of the mobile boundary between molten
steal and a growing hard part of the casting results in serious mathematical
and calculating difficulties in solving the problem. We have considered the
process possessing of a rotatory symmetry. I provided Dr. Urintsev with the
relevant equations describing the studied phenomenon and interpreted the
obtained numerical results on computer.
Being a high level specialist in Computational Mathematics and Computing
Dr. Alexander Urintsev proposed a new effective approach to get numerical
solution of the problem based both on using spline-approximation of the
unknown functions and solving Cauchy problem for stiff systems of ordinary
differential equations by means of the new numerical method published by
Gear. To solve the problem on computer Dr. Alexander Urintsev created a
large original computer code. The problem was solved in a short time period
and the results of the computer modelling obtained by us were quite
successful and very useful for the specialists in casting.
I greatly appreciate both the scientific activity and good personal and
professional qualities demonstrated by Dr. Alexander Urintsev during the
work on the given scientific project. I believe that Dr. Urintsev is a
highly qualified specialist in the field of Computational Mathematics,
Programming and Computing. I would like to recommend him for working as a
scientific programmer at computer firms producing complex scientific
software, research institutions and as a teacher of Computational
Mathematics and Computer Science at universities as well.

I have known Alexander Urintsev for more than 20 years. In his youth he
showed good mathematical abilities. As a winner of regional competitions on
mathematics and physics among school-children, Alexander was accepted to the
Mechanical-Mathematical Department of the Rostov State University by the
Rector's order without entrance examinations before finishing a secondary
school. On graduating in 1969 from the University he continued his studies as
a post-graduate at the Mechanical- Mathematical Department of the University
for two years.
He defended successfully the thesis on "Mechanics of Fluid, Gas and Plasma"
under the title "Appearance of Auto-oscillation Modes of Viscous Liquid
Motion at the Loss of Stability in Laminar Flows" at the Problems of
Mechanics Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
>From 1971 till 1990 Dr. Urintsev worked at the Research Institute of Mechanics
and Applied Mathematics of the Rostov State University: first as a junior
research associate, then from 1975 as a senior research associate. In autumn
1990 he was invited to work at the International Research Center of Nuclear
Physics, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research situated in Dubna (Russia,
Moscow Region).
For 24 years Dr. Urintsev has been working as a researcher. Carrying out
active investigations in applied mathematics and mechanics of solids, he has
been recognized as a qualified specialist and initiative scientist. He has
published about 40 scientific papers. Repeatedly, the Directorate of the
Research Institute of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics rewarded Dr. Urintsev
with premiums for successful work.
Dr. Urintsev has got the First Prize for a series of published papers on the
nonlinear theory of hydrodynamic stability at the Research Institute of
Mechanics and Applied Mathematics. He has obtained and published several
important results on the appearance of auto-oscillation modes of flow in
pipes, canals and boundary layers; he has investigated the parametric
excitation of cell convection in vibrating cavities filled with liquid. The
problem of the appearance of finite amplitude waves on the surface of liquid
flowing down because of gravity, has been solved by Dr. Urintsev rigorously.
The problem of the liquid film flowing is known to be closely connected with
the design of heat exchangers, and the investigations on vibration convection
are strongly motivated by the development of space technology of monocrystal
growth under the conditions of reduced gravitation on board the spaceship.
The package of specialized computer codes developed by Dr. Urintsev allows
one to solve various problems of the nonlinear stability of laminar flows
within short time periods. He has actively participated in investigations of
the convection in salt (sea) water carried out at the Rostov University
according to the request of the Applied Physics Institute of the Academy of
Sciences. The results obtained and the programs created were given to the
Applied Physics Institute, approved by specialists and used afterwards for
practical work.
Dr. Urintsev has worked during 10 months at the Department of Numerical
Methods in Mechanics of Solids of the Problems of Mechanics Institute
(Moscow, the Academy of Sciences), where he has actively participated in
numerical simulation of nonlinear hydrodynamics processes. The relevant
scientific results were presented by Dr. Urintsev as a report under the title
"Numerical Solution of Hydrodynamic Stability Problems" (381 pages) and
published by the Institute. The FORTRAN package developed by Dr. Urintsev
during this time was applied by the contributors of the Laboratory of
Numerical Simulation in Hydrodynamics at the Institute.
Dr. Urintsev made numerous reports at the Seminar on the Mathematical
Problems of Hydrodynamics (under Professor V.I. Yudovich), at the Seminar on
the Mechanics of Solids (under Academician I.I. Vorovich) held at the Rostov
State University, at the meetings of the Rostov Mathematical Society, at the
11-th Winter Conference on Theoretical Physics in Kirov, at the 1-st and the
2-nd All-Union Conferences on Modern Problems of Heat Gravitational
Convection, at the 4-th and 5-th All-Union Seminars on the Numerical Methods
in Mechanics of Viscous Liquids, at the 18-th Siberian Thermophysical Seminar
"Wall Turbulence", at the Research Seminar on Aeromechanics and Gas Dynamics
at the Institute of Mechanics of the Moscow State University (under
Academician G.I. Petrov), repeatedly at the University Conferences on
Nonlinear Problems of Hydrodynamic Stability Theory held by the Institute of
Mechanics of the Moscow State University. Dr. Urintsev's papers are well
known to the specialists in the theory of hydrodynamic stability, working at
the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of Russia: at the Institute
of Thermophysics, at the Institute of Hydrodynamics, at the Institute of
Theoretical an Applied Mechanics, at the Applied Physics Institute and at the
Problems of Mechanics Institute of the Academy of Sciences, at the Institute
of Mechanics of the Moscow State University and at other research
organizations that work on the problems of appearance and development of
turbulence and also on the problems of applied mathematics and mechanics.
A series of papers of Dr. Urintsev published together with Dr. G.S. Markman
are devoted to the theory of appearance of autowave processes and dissipative
structures which is a new domain of physics studying the nonlinear phenomena
of the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of solid bodies.
In 1986 - 1990 according to a contract between the Research Institute of
Mechanics and Applied Mathematics of the Rostov State University and the
Institute for Nuclear Research of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Dr. Urintsev
together with Dr. Alexander Samoylov carried out the joint investigations in
the field of magnetic optics of charged particle beams using the computer
algebra system REDUCE. The relevant scientific results were reported by Dr.
Urintsev at the 5-th All-Union Seminar on Program of Experimental
Investigations at the Meson Factory of the Institute for Nuclear Research of
the Academy of Sciences (Zvenigorod, 1987), at the 11-th All-Union Meeting on
Charged Particle Accelerators (Dubna, 1988), at the Workshop on Application
of Computer Algebra Systems in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics
(Dubna, 1989) and at the IV International Conference on Computer Algebra in
Physical Research (Dubna, 1990).
At the Rostov State University Dr. Urintsev successfully supervised the 6
months probation of Leonid F. Muratov, the researcher from the Pacific
Oceanologic Institute of Far Eastern Research Center of the Academy of
Sciences. The result of the joint investigations was a paper published
afterwards in proceedings of "A Symposium On Marine Science in Western
Pacific: The Indo-Pacific Convergence" (Townsville, Australia, 1986).
In 1988 the scientific rank "Senior Research Associate" was conferred on Dr.
Urintsev by the Supreme Certifying Commission at the Council of Ministers
of the USSR.
Dr. Urintsev is a teacher with a great experience. He has been lecturing at
the Mechanical-Mathematical Department of the Rostov State University during
11 years by combining lectures with research working as an Associate
Professor at the Computational Mathematics Chair and also at the Chair of
Functions and Functional Analysis Theory. From 1987 till 1990, as the leader
of the initiative Group on the Automation of the Analytical Calculations and
the leader of the seminar with the same name, Dr. Urintsev carried out the
work on the installation, popularization and teaching of the users of the
Institute of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics new software, computer algebra
systems to make extremely complicated symbolic calculations on a computer.
>From 1984 till 1990 Dr. Urintsev developed and tested the software for the
mainframe computer ES-1055M (compatible with IBM 370 VM) gained by the
Institute. The high qualification in modern programming tools and modern
numerical methods allows him to make a fundamental contribution in
acquirement, installation and mastering of the new perspective programming
systems and libraries of scientific and applied programs.
I would like to stress the following personal qualities of Dr. Urintsev:
he appreciates both his own working time and the working time of other
persons, strives to fulfil the entrusted job in time and with high
quality, he is able to support good professional and human relations with
his colleagues, his subordinates and with management.
Summing up the above said, I positively estimate the research and teaching
activity of Dr. Alexander Urintsev at the Rostov State University.
I consider that the high professional level of Dr. Alexander Urintsev and
his good personal and professional qualities allow me to recommend him for
working at any research or computer center, university, college and also in
firm producing software.

REFERENCE
I have known Dr. Alexander Urintsev, a senior research associate of
Particle Physics Laboratory at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, for
three years. We have carried out joint scientific investigations.
>From 1991 to 1992 Dr. Alexander Urintsev cooperated with me and other
members of the group lead by me on a project of the high-current cyclotron
installation of the TRITRON type. In theoretical plan we considered a
possibility to apply such kind of accelerators to get the high-current beams
of deutrons with energies sufficient for the purposes of the MINGEN project
aiming at creating a powerful neutron source.
When working on the project as a scientific programmer and researcher Dr.
Urintsev carried out symbolic and numerical calculations using the computer
algebra system Mathematica, FORTRAN 77 and a series of scientific programs
>from CERN Program Library: starting from formulae he successfully realized
the mathematical model of the dynamics of the longitudinal motion of charged
particle in the TRITRON type accelerator.
In studying various aspects of this problem he has shown the independence in
realization of the part of scientific project entrusted to him, demonstrated
deep knowledge of mathematics, numerical and symbolic algorithms, tricky
methods of programming, skilfully used splendid analytical and graphical
capabilities of the Mathematica system to provide considerable success in
work of the group on the given project.
That is why I greatly appreciate the scientific activities of Dr. Alexander
Urintsev in our collaboration and believe that he is able to solve involved
scientific problems connected with a qualified application of Computational
Mathematics and advanced computer systems in the fundamental and applied
research.
I believe that Dr. Urintsev may be recommended for work at research
institutes, scientific centers, laboratories and also in firms producing
sophisticated, applied and system's software.

REFERENCE
In this letter I would like to recommend Dr. Alexander Urintsev as a
highly qualified scientist. I have known Alexander Urintsev during 28 years
since 1964. From 1975 till 1982 I had a pleasure to carry out joint
investigations with him. We have published 9 joint papers. The most
significant of them are as follows:
G.S. Markman, A.L. Urintsev, About the Influence of High Frequency
Vibrations on the Appearance of Secondary Convection Modes. - Izvestiya
Akademii Nauk SSSR (News of the USSR Academy of Sciences), Mekhanika
zhidkosti i gaza (Fluid and Gas Mechanics), 1976, No. 2, pp. 90-96 (in
Russian).
G.S. Markman, A.L. Urintsev, About the Appearance of Finite Amplitude
Convection in Vibrating Fluid Layer Heating from Above. - Izvestiya Akademii
Nauk SSSR (News of the USSR Academy of Sciences), Mekhanika zhidkosti i gaza
(Fluid and Gas Mechanics), 1978, No. 1, pp. 27-35 (in Russian).
G.S. Markman, A.L. Urintsev, On the Theory of Dissipative Structures in
Turing-Prigogine Model. - Biofizika (Biophysics), Moscow, 1980, vol. XXV,
No. 1, pp. 149-152 (in Russian).
During this whole timespan Dr. Urintsev kept high creative activity and
demonstrated high competence in mathematical physics, excellent knowledge of
numerical methods and high professional level of programming.
I would like also to mention his ability to cooperate in planning and
realization of scientific projects, including the creation of original
computer codes of rather large extent. He creates programs that function in
such operating environments as VAX/VMS, VM/CMS, MS-DOS. He is an expert in
such programming languages as FORTRAN 77, C, Lisp, widely uses computer
graphics, such scientific subroutine libraries as CERN Program Library, NAG
FORTRAN Library, CPC Program Library, IBM SSP and a lot of others. During
recent years he has mastered the computer system TEX to prepare scientific
papers.
All these habits successfully allow him to create his own effective computer
codes for different applications. Such problems as hydrodynamic stability,
convection, self-organization in nonlinear dynamical systems, appearance of
solitons, calculation of motion of charged particles in transportation
systems, analysis and projecting of nonlinear magnetic optics systems, are
investigated in his articles. The relevant mathematical content consists of
analytical and numerical investigation of nonlinear differential equations
describing the researched phenomena.
Dr. Urintsev uses successfully computer algebra systems such as Mathematica
and REDUCE whose wide application is very perspective. He studied the Maple
package. A great erudition permits him to work effectively at any stage of
research including the mathematical formulation of the problem, its
investigation by means of computer and final analysis. The scientific
results obtained by Dr. Urintsev are regularly published and well-known to
the specialists. He is the author of some 40 scientific papers, many of
which published in magazines of the Academy of Sciences and later translated
into English.
Dr. Urintsev is quite experienced in teaching. During 11 years he worked as
an Associate Professor at the Chair of Computational Mathematics and at the
Chair of Functions and Functional Analysis Theory of the Mechanical-
Mathematical Department of the Rostov State University. He lectured on
programming, numerical methods, probability theory, supervised the diploma
thesis papers and research work of graduates.
I would like to mention that Dr. Urintsev is not only a recognized expert
in his field but he is also a charming and reliable person for colleagues
and students. As a participant of the collaboration he is known for his
ample working capacity, thoroughness and persistence in developing programs
and research projects.
I believe that Dr. Urintsev is an excellent specialist to work at any
research center or firm in the field of applied research and computer
systems, besides, he is a highly qualified lecturer and teacher at
university or college.

To: "Dr. Urintsev " <URINTSEV@SE.JINR.DUBNA.SU>
Dear Dr. Urintsev,
A received your long message last Saturday in the morning.
I can't help you but I will forward your message to many other
people that work in better and greater universities here in Brazil. My
university is small; I think you wouldn't have interesting work to do
here in Joao Pessoa anyway.
Last year I heard something about this: "Some universities in
Rio de Janeiro (more than 8 millions inhabitants) and in Sao Paulo
(more than 12 millions inhabitants) are interested in russian researchers."
I am not sure, but I heard that some russians are working in Rio de Janeiro
receiving 2000 dollars (???) a month. Our medium salary is about 1000 dollars.
We have a Bitnet discussion list called SBM-L (e-mail: SBM-L @ UFRJ)
where we can contact almost all brazilian mathematicians. I sent your message
to SBM-L. Many people in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo will read it next
week.
We can live peacefully and easyly in Brazil. But we have too many and
too big problems. We have an inflation rate of 30 % a month. Some of the
best Brazilian researchers are going to live in USA and Western Europe.
Congratulations for your Curriculum Vitae.
Sincerely,
Lenimar Nunes
P. S. I am sorry for my poor English.
